Blog Entry 7th Week (1/11/2021 - 7/11/2021)
No brain is equal and no person has the same intelligence. This looks like something obvious as we all have our differences, but when it comes to education we are all taught the same way, as if we learn at the same speed. That's far from the reality and, because we all have different kinds of intelligence, today I'm going to talk about the Multiple Intelligence Theory.
The Theory of Multiple Intelligences is a theory developed by Howard Gardner and published in 1983. This theory says that all people have different kinds of intelligence which can be the following:
- Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence
- Musical Intelligence
- Interpersonal Intelligence
- Visual Spatial Intelligence
- Verbal Linguistic Intelligence
- Intrapersonal Intelligence
- Logical Mathematical Intelligence
- Naturalistic Intelligence
No kid is the same as another. Every kid has their own hobbies, attitude, personality… Because of this, kids can be smart in many different ways, not just the ones usually measured in schools. In schools, kids are labeled as intelligent if, for example, they win a math quiz or have great marks in English. However, there are many kids that are talented and are really intelligent in other areas. Howard Gardner, PhD at Harvard University, claimed that it made more sense, scientifically and educationally, to think that there are various types of intelligence that are all separate from one another. He divided all these types of intelligence in eight categories which I've already mentioned.
I think it's really important to take this into account when teaching because it can make a really big difference in how much kids learn and how interested they are in the subject.
Teachers can use multiple intelligences in the class to make every student be involved in the class and the activities that are being done. Every kid has different ways of learning and processing information, as well as expressing it. Some may be able to express themselves better with words but others may express themselves better by music or painting. By giving everyone their own way to express themselves, all kids can learn what they need to learn equally. Humans are so different from one another that we can’t make everyone learn the same way because it’s not going to be effective for everyone. Teachers need to adapt themselves and their way of teaching to the different students they have. Teachers can use multiple intelligences in class by not just making students explain concepts and things learned in class by writing, but maybe acting them out, singing them, drawing them...
